Our weekend in pictures

Friday night we went out to dinner with Misty and Paden...a good time was had by all :)

Playing Fairy Princess together in her room on Sunday morning...

Skating lessons Sunday pm...There was free skate after her lesson, and an old friend from E's preschool showed up, which made it extra fun!

A nice weekend. E goes back to school today after vacation. I think she is looking forward to it.

Happy Birthday to me :)

Yesterday was my birthday. We celebrated at my parents' last night. E had spent the day at Maria's (it's school vacation week) while I worked (on my bday, blech...) and they made me a bday cake. Plus my mom bought a chocolate mousse cake from Whole Foods so I got 2 cakes! Lucky me :)

What is ok and not ok to blog about?

As Elizabeth is getting older, it is feeling more and more important to me to respect her privacy. This means being really mindful about what I share on this blog. Vague-blogging (i.e. "something really major happened last night, but I can't blog about it since it's so private...") drives me nuts. I hate it when people do that. I won't be a vague-blogger. But I am left with kind of a dilemma. Mostly I post cute pictures and recap stuff we've done. And occasionally I'll write a more "deep" post about my feelings about something usually adoption related. But I very rarely blog about the more intimate details of our lives, the real ups and downs we have around here. Since it's just Elizabeth and me, with no one else to dilute things, it can get pretty intense. E is an amazing, awesome kid, but oooh yeah, we have our challenges. It's hard for me to blog about the hard parts for a couple reasons, 1- the privacy issue, and 2- I guess a big part of me feels afraid of being judged as a parent if I write openly about our struggles. It just seems easier to post smiling pics of us at Disney on Ice and not go into all of the other stuff. Now just to be clear, our "challenges" are not anything out of the ordinary. I'm not keeping some deep dark secret (not being a vague-blogger, I promise!). Basically I'm just talking about the ordinary challenges that a single working mom and her kid go through. How much is ok to blog about? Often, I think I'd like to get into more personal stuff (sometimes a mama needs to vent, ya know?), but it feels like an invasion of E's privacy so I don't. If our pictures and names weren't already out there on this blog, maybe I would feel more free to. But since they are, I feel limited in what I can/will share. I'm not complaining. More just thinking out loud. I actually like my blog (if I do say so myself ;). I think it will be a great record for E of her childhood. And while I sometimes would love to vent about the more challenging things around here, because it would be nice to get the support (being a single mom can be tough, people!), I won't give up my daughter's privacy to do it. So I guess I just keep going how I've been going, lots of cute pics and recaps of the fun stuff E does. Because that stuff is real, as real as all the mundane stuff that doesn't get blogged about.
I would love to get any of your thoughts about the privacy issue, all you mommy bloggers out there. Where do you draw the line about what you will blog about?

100th day of school

Well, it's hard to believe, but she's had 100 days of Kindergarten already. It's funny, when I was growing up, I never heard a thing about the 100th day of school, never even knew when it was. Now it seems like all the schools make a big deal out of it. Anyway, E was excited about it, and had a fun day. Here she is celebrating with the other girls in her class.

A trip to the Rainforest

Tonight, I took E to a presentation by an organization called Understanding Wildlife. They are a group that goes around educating kids about the Rainforest and actually brings several kinds of birds and other live animals with them. Including a Boa Constrictor. Yes, that would be my daughter below, holding a live Boa Constrictor. And apparently happy to be doing so. As we stood in line for the privilege of getting a chance to hold this lovely creature, E told me I didn't have to go up with her "because remember you're afraid of snakes, anyway, Mommy."

You can't really tell in this picture below, but she is petting a baby Alligator. Very cool!
It was a really fun show, and E loved getting to pet some of the animals!

Who is that big kid?

So today Elizabeth spent the day at her Afterschool program at the Y, since school was closed again to clean up after the Blizzard. When I went to pick her up this afternoon, I peeked in the window that looked down into the rock wall room, where I knew her group was today. It didn't take me long to spot her, but wow...she just looks so huge!

It kind of takes my breath away, how fast it's all going...

Scenes from the long blizzardy weekend

Saturday night, after it stopped snowing, we went out for a little walk. There was lots (and lots) of snow. Everywhere.

Some shaving cream fun...I remembered using shaving cream back in my days as a preschool teacher and knew E would like it. She did. :)

Today was sunny and gorgeous. Perfect day for sledding and shoveling.

Took me quite a while to dig out my car, but I did it!

E's buddy from school came over for a while this afternoon to go sledding.

Sledding with a neighbor friend

Did I mention there was a lot of snow? Everywhere?

We had a really nice long weekend. E has had a cold, so she was sort of low energy much of the time. We spent a lot of time just hanging out inside, playing games and watching movies. School is closed again tomorrow, but luckily her Afterschool program will be open all day, so she will go there, since I have to work.

Blizzahd!

Well, the forecasters got it right this time, we woke up this morning to 18 + inches of snow and lots of wind....

It started snowing yesterday afternoon. School and my work had already been cancelled in anticipation of the storm. I took E to the McDonalds play place for a little while before it got bad out. I figured we should get out while we still could, since I wasn't sure how long we'd be cooped up at home. She had fun there and made a quick friend. :)

We spent the rest of the day at home, playing games, drinking coffee (me) and watching Disney World videos on You Tube (her).

This morning we ventured out briefly in the snow...

Yeah...the pool was closed, in case anyone was wondering...

She only lasted about 5 minutes before asking to come inside...my little San Diego girl isn't a big fan of the cold and wind. :0
